What should you not do Before an Echocardiogram?

One step before the echocardiogram that gives us tremendous stress is not the test itself, but the uncertainty surrounding it. We overthink how we should prepare.  What if something goes wrong?  Fortunately, once the procedure starts, we understand how simple it is.

Before the test, we need to prepare ourselves by knowing what to do and what not to do. So, let us explore.

Echocardiography explained-

Echocardiography is a procedure that uses sound waves to detect abnormalities in the heart. A painless, non-invasive procedure that uses a transducer, a handheld device that moves on the skin of the chest. The transducer is used to send and receive sound waves, which create images on the monitor. It helps the doctors assess the structure and function of the heart.

Types of echocardiograms:-

  • Transthoracic echocardiograms: The most commonly performed type of echocardiogram. When we refer to an echocardiogram test, it usually means the transthoracic echocardiogram.
  • Transesophageal echocardiogram: If a standard ECG fails or if a more detailed view of the valves is needed, a transducer is inserted through a tube into the esophagus to obtain clear images. The procedure may require sedation.
  • A Doppler echocardiogram helps to measure the speed, pressure, and direction of blood flow in the arteries. In it, the Doppler signals bounce off blood as it flows through the heart and blood vessels.
  • Stress echocardiogram: The images are taken before and after exercise. If patients cannot exercise, stress is induced by administering medication.

What preparations are needed before an echocardiogram?

Before undergoing an echocardiogram, it is best to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours, refrain from consuming caffeine, nicotine, and medications, and consult with your doctor for further guidance.

  • Food and drink
    • For a standard echo test, eat or drink as usual.
    • If you are undergoing a transesophageal echocardiogram, you must stop eating or drinking food for at least six hours before the test.
  • Caffeine, nicotine, and smoking should be avoided. These substances should not be consumed before the test, as they can affect heart rate and blood pressure, which can influence the results.
  • Medications: Should not be continued; stop taking them after consulting your healthcare provider. Some may require adjustments in the dose.
  • Applying oils and lotions: Do not apply lotions or oils to the chest before the test, as this prevents the probe from making proper contact with the skin.

What should you not do after the test?

  • Driving
    • After the test, do not drive on your own, because the transesophageal echocardiogram is performed under sedation.
  • Strenuous activity
    • After a stress echocardiogram, avoid engaging in strenuous activity. Additionally, eating and drinking heavily after the test should be strictly avoided.

Conclusion

To ensure the echocardiogram procedure runs smoothly and yields the best results, it is essential to follow all recommended dos and don’ts before and after the test. We must follow simple steps, such as avoiding certain foods and medications, and following instructions on how to wear clothes appropriately, to help us be comfortable and make the test effective by preparing well and following all the instructions provided by the healthcare provider.
